Hundreds Attend County Hearings on Draft Shoreland Management Plan 11/19/2009

Hundreds of county residents turned out this week for two public hearings on a new draft Shoreland Management Plan that would impact any property located within 1,000 feet of a lake or pond, or 300 feet from a river or stream.  The GMCC testified in opposition to the draft plan.  While the GMCC commends the intent and goals of the project, there are concerns about the economic impact on individual property owners and property values.

The hearings were scheduled to gather public input should the recommendations form an ordinance at a later date.  Members of the Dane County Lakes & Watersheds Commission emphasized that no official action will take place at this time.  That statement was further reflected in an adopted motion offered by Supervisors Miles and Hulsey to delay action until the updated state shoreland standards (NR 115) are completed.

Before any ordinance is introduced, the GMCC encourages a thorough economic analysis of the proposed recommendations.  It is critical that any new regulations be balanced to ensure that both environmental and economic objectives are met.
