Stimulus Update w/ VIDEO from Eggs & Issues 03/26/2009

More than 100 GMCC members and elected officials packed the Madison Concourse Hotel on Wednesday morning to attend Eggs & Issues, featuring Gary Wolter, GMCC Board member and head of the Office of Recovery and Reinvestment, a new agency created to assist the state and residents through the federal stimulus process.

Wolter says one of the biggest challenges so far has been addressing the high expectations from municipalities and businesses requesting stimulus dollars.  "Expectations are greatly outstripping the dollars available under the stimulus bill," said Wolter.

Although the Office of Recovery and Reinvestment has no decision-making powers regarding where the funds are allocated, the office plays a key facilitating role connecting municipalities, individuals and businesses with the appropriate contacts and state agencies that will be administering the programs.

Several state agencies have created web pages outlining the projects that are available for stimulus dollars.  For example, the state Department of Transportation, which will administer more than $500 million for state and local highway and bridge projects, has created a website (click here) specifically devoted to transit aid and other transportation related projects.  The Department of Revenue has created a page outlining the many tax incentive provisions provided through the Recovery Act.  Of particular relevance to GMCC members is a DOR page explaining the tax provisions available to Wisconsin businesses

If your business is located in the City of Madison, you can find information on the city's efforts and provide your feedback at the city's stimulus website.

A complete list of agency websites and general information on the Recovery Act and Wisconsin's process for applying for funds can be found on the Office of Recovery and Reinvestment website at: www.recovery.wisconsin.gov

Given the historic number of dollars available and the tight deadlines approaching, take the time to educate yourself on what is available and the opportunities it may present for your business.
