Tim Metcalfe

President & Co-Owner
Metcalfe Markets

Metcalfe’s is a two store grocery chain rich in tradition, with stores in Madison and Wauwatosa, WI. Tim is a fourth generation grocer who took over the reins of the family business in 2000 from his father, Tom, who was also the long time Mayor of Monona. The family business was actually started by Tom’s grandfather in Butler, WI as a food co-op in 1917. Tom was also the creator of the World’s Largest Brat Fest, which has become a true Madison institution. Tim and his brother, Kevin, continue the family tradition of producing Brat Fest every Memorial Day Weekend. Each year Madisonians attempt to break their own Brat eating world record. Since its inception, Brat Fest has raised over $850,000 for local groups and charities that help staff the event.

For almost a century, Metcalfe’s has been known for its outstanding customer service and community involvement, Tim has carried on and built upon these traditions, constantly raising the bar with an emphasis on specialty products and outstanding quality in  meat, seafood and produce.

Tim is consistently ahead of his peers on issues of both environmental and economic sustainability. Recently recognized by the EPA as a Green Power Leader, Metcalfe’s is proud to be 100% green powered. Tim’s stores have taken a true leadership role in seeking out and promoting locally produced and sourced bakery, meat, cheese and produce. Metcalfe’s innovation of their “Food Miles” program has been nationally recognized for its unique and creative way of identifying local items throughout the store.

Tim has won countless awards, most recently he was recognized by Madison Magazine as the 2009 Best of Business Winner and The National Grocers Association Creative Choice Award Winner for Metcalfe’s Food Miles Program, numerous local and national design awards, and was recognized as the 2006 Family Business of the year.
